About the research centre or Inria department

The Inria Saclay-Île-de-France Research Centre was established in 2008. It has developed as part of the Saclay site in partnership with Paris-Saclay University and with the Institut Polytechnique de Paris .

The centre has 40 project teams , 27 of which operate jointly with Paris-Saclay University and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris; Its activities occupy over 600 people, scientists and research and innovation support staff, including 44 different nationalities.

Context

Each Inria centre comprises an Experimentation and Development Department (in French Service Expérimentation et Développement, SED) that is tasked with 3 main missions:

  • Software development project management and support: co-development with research teams, technical supervision, project emergence and project setup
  • Organization of experimentation support: design and monitoring of experimentation platforms, connection with computing resources and support for conducting experiments
  • Expertise and advice: promotion of good development and software distribution practices, training and mentoring, recruitment assistance, representation of Inria in related ecosystems

A SED department gathers about ten engineers, mainly permanent positions (civil servants or permanent contracts), plus a varying number of engineers under fixed-term contracts. Most department members are assigned to a given research teams

Hierarchical position: The head of SED (RSED) reports to the Inria Research centre Director (DCR)

The RSED has 3 main missions:

  • Manages the SED service (managerial role)
  • Contributes to the definition and evolutions of the institute's technological development strategy
  • Leads the implementation of this strategy in the centre and coordinate it with site policy

Beyond these main missions, the RSED may regularly be called upon to contribute to other missions of the centre, or more broadly of the Institute (including activities outside their professional area of expertise).
