About the research centre or Inria department
The Inria Saclay-Île-de-France Research Centre was established in 2008. It has developed as part of the Saclay site in partnership with Paris-Saclay University and with the Institut Polytechnique de Paris .
The centre has 40 project teams , 27 of which operate jointly with Paris-Saclay University and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris; Its activities occupy over 600 people, scientists and research and innovation support staff, including 44 different nationalities.
Context
Each Inria centre comprises an Experimentation and Development Department (in French Service Expérimentation et Développement, SED) that is tasked with 3 main missions:
- Software development project management and support: co-development with research teams, technical supervision, project emergence and project setup
- Organization of experimentation support: design and monitoring of experimentation platforms, connection with computing resources and support for conducting experiments
- Expertise and advice: promotion of good development and software distribution practices, training and mentoring, recruitment assistance, representation of Inria in related ecosystems
A SED department gathers about ten engineers, mainly permanent positions (civil servants or permanent contracts), plus a varying number of engineers under fixed-term contracts. Most department members are assigned to a given research teams
Hierarchical position: The head of SED (RSED) reports to the Inria Research centre Director (DCR)
The RSED has 3 main missions:
- Manages the SED service (managerial role)
- Contributes to the definition and evolutions of the institute's technological development strategy
- Leads the implementation of this strategy in the centre and coordinate it with site policy
Beyond these main missions, the RSED may regularly be called upon to contribute to other missions of the centre, or more broadly of the Institute (including activities outside their professional area of expertise).

Main activities
Manages the SED service and contributes to the overall centre’s management:
- Hierarchical manager of the service: career development, annual reviews, skills development
- Responsible for administrative and financial management of the service: budget, travel, equipment and work environment
- Responsible for technological development within the centre: participation in committees (e.g., technological development commission), expertise, advice and recommendations to management
- Member of the centre's board: participation in seminars and regular meetings
- Design and implementation of the centre's experimental platforms
Contribute to the definition and evolutions of the institute's technological development strategy
- As a member of the group that gathers the SED managers from all centres and managers of the Technological Development Service of the Deputy General Directorate for Innovation (DGD-I) and is tasked with elaborating the common strategy
- Provides contributions to the definition and evolution of roles for technological development
- Provides contributions to the mapping of skills and development projects for planning and steering: sharing and cross-advising of projects from each centre at the national level
- Initiates and implements new technological development projects
- Provides advice and expertise useful for technological development in scientific and innovation projects
Leads the implementation of the Institute’s strategy at the centre level, and coordinates with local academic sites’ policies
- Technological development leadership, in coordination with centre’s management
- Handling of staff member recruitment,
- Supervision of all engineers and their activities
- Structuration of development activities within the centre, to support scientific activities, strengthen economic impact and contribute to public policies
- Advice to scientists on the technological development matters of their team projects
- Advice to centre management on all technological development-related matters
- Contribution to grant applications
- Management of allocation of human resources to projects, and monitoring of resources allocated to project teams or other entities such as experimentation spaces and platforms
- Organisation of training and events for the centre's engineers community and ecosystem
- Technology watch
- Influence within the local ecosystem
- Organization and facilitation of communication and collaborations with third parties in the local environment, for example through participation in regional development networks
- Contribution to scientific mediation (demonstrators, …)
The Head of SED is responsible for the implementation of all SED missions

Skills

Required Skills
- Knowledge and experience in software development: at least one programming language (C++, Java, OCaml, Python, Rust, ...), software architecture and programming paradigms, software engineering, good practices and software development tools (versioning, documentation, compilation, packaging...)
- Knowledge and/or experience in one of Inria's scientific fields, particularly in scientific experimentation related with digital sciences
- Knowledge and experience in hardware and/or software mockups and prototyping
- Ability to conduct technology watch
- Ability to write, publish, present and disseminate the institute's development activities and results, in French and in English
- Management capabilities, technical supervision and ability to delegate
